This article is a summary of the “Big Omaha Keynote” held by Gary Vaynerchuck (read about him here) in 2009. Gary has many highlighted moments which I will point out and explain a little. Even though I am giving a summary and review on this video, I still recommend that you watch the entire video on your own. I have embedded the video at the bottom of this article for you to watch. Also, if you like Garys’ style, make sure to purchase his book “Crush It!”
I must warn you that Gary uses explicit language in his videos, because he is ‘pumped” about topics. Just bare with the language if you have problems with it. As I go through any quotes, i’m going to try to cut out some of the curse words where I feel they can be.
From around 7:20 to 8:30 into the video, Gary starts bringing up points about using your time wisely after your normal job. You should use this time to position yourself to jump on the “creating content bandwagon”. It is so easy to get your word out these days, that if you are not, you are simply not keeping up with our society.
“You are doing a lot of bumb shit, maybe you don’t need to play four hours of Madden when you hate your job.”
“There is so much time after your job to start positioning yourself. I am a big fan of creating content, no matter what you do.”
My Breakdown: You are wasting your time on a lot of dumb things that are getting you no where in life. If you hate your job, and you want something better for your self, then you shouldn’t blow huge amounts of time on things like games, or throwing sheep at someone on Facebook. Use your time after your job to start positioning yourself on simply creating content
“Everybody has the ability to communicate in the world we live in today, you have the ability to put out your content. If you are not putting our your voice, then you are not living in the society we live in anymore.”
My Breakdown: These days, you have such a huge amount of easy tools to put out your content to the world, if you are not using these tools to put your voice out, you are not engaging in the current society.
“I Really believe, truly believe that having a home, a web page, a blog, is an essential thing. Things like facebook and twitter bring you to your home.”
My Breakdown: It is essential to have your own home base. Your home base can be a blog or a web page, but it must be your own. Other websites like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn should be used as tools to bring people to your home.
At 8:30 to 9:30 into the video Gary brings up a point about the internet as a whole and as a platform. He stresses that the internet is so young, and it is simply going to destroy other forms of media like newspaper. Television as we know it is not going to survive this change.
He brings up this point to show you that there will be a change in the way people consume content, and you should position yourself to be there when it happens.
At 11:30 to 12:45 Gary says that if you love something, even something as small at “ketchup”, then you should create content about it every day. You should then finding everyone else that loves ketchup. This will then give you the chance to get advertising and sponsorships from the companies who develop ketchup products. He then stresses that many things are in place for you now, and if you love something, you should devote your time to creating content about it, not wasting your time on “dumb shit”.
At 15:00 to 16:00 Gary again talks about the age of the internet and that it has already beating out many other types of media even though it is so young. Just wait until it is older!
If you get on the internet and simply “Care” about others and things, and let people know about it, “you will win”
At 18:20 to 19:00 Gary explains how money that is spent in other forms of media besides the internet, is going to transition more onto the internet. All this money that is going to start to go online will be in play for content creators. He then gives a GREAT tip on how to take advantage of how to get your piece. Gary then also mentions his book as his more detailed version of letting people know how to take advantage. Crush It! on Amazon
A quick little tip at 23:00 to 23:30 tells you to watch out what you name yourself or your website. Don’t focus the name on something to specific. Focus on your niche, but don’t rely your name on another personal or businesses tool.
At about 23:40 to 24:55 Gary starts talking about not liking the term “Social Media”. All these “Social Media” things are tools just as phones and fax machines are tools used for business. They are used to operate a business and perform tasks, and these businesses are all about making money. Product companies are going to pay for eye balls, if you can bring eye balls to your home base by using these tools, the money will follow. He then stresses again to get on the “content band-wagon” so that you can draw some of these eye balls for yourself.
Gary gives his very true answer to a ROI question. At 29:55 to 30:25 Gary says “I don’t give a shit about ROI”… he don’t even give a F about SEO. He explains that his reasoning being him not caring about these minor details is because he is simply focused on creating a Global Brand. He is worried about leveraging a brand. This means that he basically wants to let as many people in as many different venues know about him and what his products and services may focus on.
“Do what you love, that is the only way to win this game, is to do what you LOVE!” is a quote at 30:45 to 31:00 that Gary stresses about doing what you love is the only way to make a website, blog, podcast, or any other content producing creation work.
Gary lets us know around 40:50 to 41:20 that he didn’t have to go out and ask for people to interview him or people to put him on their shows. Anyone that he ever went on a show for emailed or called him. He didn’t have any PR guy helping him set up any of this. He sat in a room on his own, created content, loved the people who consumed his content, care about content, use the online tools to distribute it, and “make it win!”
Simple great quote at 41:50 to 41:55 “All you have to do is start building content around what you love, you will shit your pants with the things that start happening! You will be blown away! You can always get new pairs of pants.”
Gary explains at 42:45 to 32:30 that $50 Billion in advertising dollars is in play, everyone reading this should just start writing now. There is an advertiser for very every niche. When the “ipod like” transition occurs for television, the people who are already in position, creating content, is going to win.
An audience member asks a question about monetizing a blog at 44:55 to 47:15. Gary decides to use the “Hot Girl Rule” to explain how to create an advertising sale. This is my favorite part of the video and I suggest you just watch rather than me explain at all. He then explains about a video he did about creating a fake sale for his make believe “Beer Blog”
The video is almost over at 47:40 to 48:10 when Gary is letting everyone know that everything you can think of has the possibility of being created just as he created Win Library TV.
Gary ends with this… “If you don’t go out and get it, I will!”

I know this article is a little long. But 12 minutes of highlighted areas are better than 50 minutes! Hope you enjoy! BUT, I still recommend you watch the entire video.
