It is no longer a secret that whatever you post online, especially on social media websites, becomes a part of your “public permanent record”.
Situations are starting to arise where the people who were reckless with social networking sites, who were 13-15, are discovering their bad decisions. It is these individuals and older adults as well who are applying for colleges and jobs that are getting denied because of what was found online in their past.
It is not even good enough to go back and delete. Even though an original post is removed, it may very well be available since many search engines and other sites keep a copy of content.
It is getting to the point where a typical individual must assume they are always being watched, just like celebrities and athletes. Everything that you post online influences your personal brand now and in the future.
But what fun is that for teenagers and young adults??? Should we consider using one name from birth until adulthood and then change our now? As weird as that sounds, the CEO of Google actually said that this may not be such a bad idea. Schmidt predicts that every young person one day will be entitled to change their name on reaching adulthood in order to disown youthful hijinks.
That is kind of scary don’t you think? Are we going to see children given short-term names and then have their parents “saving” their favorite name of adulthood?
And if this happens, wouldn’t it be possible to see things like Osama can become Obama and vice versa? Is that acceptable to the world?
Personally I think it is foolish to use social networking sites to “black ball” otherwise talented and responsible people for their acts as a minor.
Do you really want to work for a company that is intrusive and paranoid about what you did when you were under 25 years old?
Regardless of what you think about the situation, I just want you to watch our for “drunk Facebooking” because you need to just remember that everything, EVERYTHING you share becomes a part of your social media permanent record
